THE COSTUME COUNCIL
Founded in 1974, the purpose of the Costume Council is to support the Chicago History Museum as a leader in the documentation and interpretation of the history and the art of costume. Through the fundraising efforts of the Council, the Museum has maintained a thriving collection and operates a conservation lab that manages and sustains this critical aspect of its holdings. The Costume Council proudly supports the Collection, which has grown to be one of the world’s premier costume collections with over 50,000 pieces, dating from the 1750s to present day.
THE COSTUME COLLECTION
Many artifacts in the Museum’s collection were made by Chicago’s dressmakers, milliners, and manufacturers. The costume holdings encompass a number of items worn by prominent Chicagoans and Americans. Some unique pieces include personal items belonging to Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, Michael Jordan’s basketball uniform and Mahalia Jackson’s choir robe. The earliest pieces include suits worn by George Washington and John Adams. The Museum’s extensive couture holdings, ranging from Charles Worth gowns to the innovative designs of Yohji Yamamoto, have earned an international reputation. The collection now serves as a unique international resource to the preservation, interpretation and understanding of fashion history.
TREASURED TEN: Selections from the Costume Collection
Stephen Burrows, Scotty Piper, Patrick Kelly, Willi Smith, and Barbara Bates—five stories within the folds of fashion.
The clothing we wear and the styles we embrace often reveal what we value and what we aspire to, ultimately helping us understand ourselves and examine the world in which we live. From the Chicago History Museum’s clothing collection of more than 50,000 pieces, ten never-been-exhibited ensembles were selected to tell the remarkable stories of these five designers. Dating from the 1970s to the 1980s, the garments are expressions of their creators’ experiences and identities. Dressing celebrity clientele as well as everyday people, they produced engaging, conscientious, and stylish designs while contributing their own perspectives to fashion.
